Overeating: Got to Have it, Or Just a Habit?

by Steve Miles

Overeating can be caused by several things. It can be a hormonal problem. There could be an endocrine imbalance or a digestive defect. It could be caused by extreme hunger. Or, you could be overeating simply out of habit. Of the possible causes, the last one is probably the most likely. Most of us are not overeating because of a health issue nor are we overeating because we are starving to death. We overeat out of habit. We develop these habits in several ways. We get used to eating in a routine manner, at a routine time and any change to that will make our body wonder why. Or, we see others eating at this time and think we should be eating then too. And finally, we have grown up with the belief that this is when you eat, and so you eat whether you are hungry or not.

Stuck in an Eating Rut

For years, you worked the same job and ate the same meals at the same time. You recently changed jobs and now you eat your meals at slightly different times. However, at your old supper time, you feel like you are going to starve to death, even though you eat about an hour earlier. Breaking an old habit is hard to do, but very necessary, especially this one. If you are not feeling as if you might faint or you know that you are not really hungry, try to ignore the feeling until your body adjusts to the new eating schedule.

The Attack of the Munching Office Mates

No matter where you work, there are going to be mindless munchers who insist on bringing snacks and candies and then setting them in the break-room for everyone to eat. They will wander back and forth past your desk in a never-ending parade of blissful chowing. Each time they go by, they remind you of the delicious goody that is just waiting for you in the break-room. At every desk around you, everyone is stuffing their faces, beautific smiles on their face as they type a bit, nibble a bit, and then type some more. Eventually your body will start wondering why it does not get to have sticky bon-bons or gooey chocolate cakes. Give in once and your body will have won. You will soon be another of the Sugar Zombies, wearing a rut in the floor between the break-room and your desk. Until they start sticking celery and carrot sticks in there, the break-room is off limits.

The Clock Is Not the Boss of You

Ask people when they eat certain meals and you will not get answers about hunger at all. You will get times, and for some of them, these times are set in stone. Dinner is at six p.m. and you will eat it whether you are hungry or not, mister. But, what if you are starving at five instead? What if you do not really feel like eating at six? Do you still sit down and choke down part of a meal anyway? You would be shocked by how many people do just that.

The clock is only a tool; it tells us what time of day or night it is, nothing more. The food police will not cart you off to jail if you eat a meal at a slightly different time than what is considered the norm.

Eat when you are hungry and then stop when you are satisfied but not full. Do not eat because others are encouraging you to do so, or because the clock said so, or because you usually eat at this time. If you eat enough when you are actually hungry you might actually find yourself overeating a lot less often.
