Creatine Cycling for Maximum Muscle Gains

Creatine cycling is one of the bodybuilder's secrets for massive muscle gains. If you ever hit a plateau or find yourself in a training rut, try a creatine monohydrate supplement.

Creatine directly helps in muscle cell energy production by giving one of its phosphate molecules to ADP, which is a depleted ATP molecule. ATP is the "universal energy molecule" and must be used if a cell is to produce any energy. It is widely documented that taking creatine supplements helps the body convert ADP to ATP. The end result is you have more energy.

Having more energy means you can push more weight for more reps, using the overloading principle which is the cornerstone behind progressive weight resistance training.

Interestingly, creatine supplementation seems to work as well as intense physical exercise in terms of causing the body to produce and release Human Growth Hormone.

In short, creatine causes an anabolic effect. I can vouch for this. I made my absolute best gains while following a "creatine cycling" program. In a nutshell, here's how it works:

  • For the first 5 days, take 5 grams of creatine 4 times a day.
  • For the following three weeks, take 2-5 grams per day.
  • For two weeks, take no creatine.
  • Repeat

There's an interesting report called The Creatine Report here (PDF download).
